Precision in Every Figure: Why Automatic Conversion of Financial and Legal PDFs Is a Reputational Risk
In the translation of financial and legal documents, there is no room for “approximately.” When a translation agency receives an annual report or a complex contract in PDF format, data integrity becomes the top priority. Yet automatic converters often treat figures and legal columns as decorative elements, thereby destroying the logic of the document.
Using a financial audit with two-column legal text as an example, let us look at where the biggest risks are hiding.
1. Broken tables and number segmentation
Financial reports contain hundreds of tables. Automatic converters rarely build a genuine table grid. Instead, they imitate one using tabs or invisible text boxes.
The problem in a CAT tool: If a number such as 1,500,000.50 is split by an internal formatting tag or an extra space, the automatic number substitution function in the CAT tool will not work. The translator is forced to enter figures manually, increasing the risk of typos in financial data.
After export: When the language changes, for example, when commas switch to decimal points, the structure of a tab-based table collapses. Columns of figures shift, and it becomes impossible to tell which number belongs to which row without checking against the original.
2. Two-column format: broken parallelism
Legal documents such as contracts and statutes often use a two-column format, with English and Italian or German side by side.
What the converter does: It frequently reads two columns as one wide line running across the entire page, or splits them into dozens of disconnected text boxes.
The consequence: The text stops flowing in sync. If the left column grows after translation, it does not push the corresponding clause in the right column along with it. Legal conditions drift across pages, and the contract loses its legal clarity.
3. Legal stamps and seals: working with non-text elements
This is a critical issue for legal documents. Automatic services treat seals as ordinary images, either ignoring them or placing them on top of the text, covering it entirely.

The risk: Automatic converters often ignore merging, splitting one header across multiple cells, or combining data from two different columns into one.
The consequence: When the translator encounters this confusion in the CAT tool, they may misread the context of a financial figure. After export, the document requires a complete table rebuild.
